Melt – an artwork that reveals itself

During the Kunstschouw exhibition in Burgh-Haamstede, Zeeland, our artwork Melt stood in the heart of the village in the shadow beneath a tree, beside the castle, a very nice spot.

A 1,800-liter block of ice stood on a pedestal, containing a photograph that slowly revealed itself. Melt is a collaboration between myself and my son, multimedia artist Victor Dissel. It took four days to melt, as the weather was warm from the very start.

There was a great deal of interest. Some visitors returned day after day to witness the transformation and everybody wanted to touch the ice as a physical encounter with impermanence.

People often asked: What is inside the block? But that question captured the core of Melt: slowing down, being still, allowing the process to unfold in its own time.

Victor and I were grateful that the work was presented so openly accessible to everyone, in the public space, that openness reflected the spirit of the piece.

The photo inside the ice was before taken underwater in the Mirorlake, featuring model Joy Draiki. I printed the image, froze it into the block, and then photographed the melting process.

That slow shift brought unexpected beauty and deep insights about letting go.

And some Good! news: Melt continues its journey

We are thrilled to share that a new edition of Melt will travel to Helsinki in January, where it will be part of the Stop Time festival and after that, it will be shown at Light it in Utrecht.

We look forward to seeing the work come alive again each time in a new context, with new audiences and reflections.

Melt invites reflection, from hard to soft, from stillness to flow a movement toward lightness and subtle energy revealing the beauty of impermanence.

The photograph, printed on Dibond (80 × 120 cm), is available in a limited edition, signed by both artists.

A unique work, shaped by ice, light and time.
